How We Make Time For One Another
Owning your own business can be very stressful and time consuming. It’s easy to become so focused on your work that you forget what’s most important in life--each other. When Bert and I started this business, we made a promise to one another that we wouldn’t let this happen to us--our love for one another and our family is much stronger than that. And when someone recently asked us what the secret is, here are some of the thoughts I came up with:
Have Dinner With Each Other Every Night…
Surprisingly, this one can be difficult.. There are many times we end up staying late at the store to make sure things are ready to go for the next day or we are putting some finishing touches together for an event. But, no matter what time we get home, whether we’ve gotten take-out or not, we always take at least 30 minutes to have a meal together.
Let it All Out on the Car Ride...
Some think we’re crazy, but we actually drive to and from work together every day. Don’t believe it? It’s true… We only have one car. It’s just what we do. Owning a business together, we typically have a lot to talk about. But, throughout the day, we have different roles and responsibilities; so, there’s not a lot of time for chit-chat. Some days we talk about the store, products and our customers, some days we call our son Nate on speaker phone or sometimes we just share the positive and negatives from our day.
Get Away From It All…
Finally, sometimes you need more than just the weekend to relax. Sometimes you just have to get away from it all, and that’s ok. Work does allow us some fun travel to connect with colleagues across the country and work with our vendor partners to purchase new jewelry pieces. But, we try to plan time for just us either before the meeting or after. Mostly, we like to take short weekend getaways, but from time to time we like to throw in a nice, week-long vacation when we can. It’s the best way to recharge our batteries and refocus on what’s most important. -Tyna
