Picking the Best Ring for Her Hand Shape and Size

Picking the Best Ring for Her Hand Shape and Size
“How do I know that the ring I pick out will look good on her finger?” A common concern we hear from soon-to-be-grooms. Honestly, I am sure she’ll love any ring you pick out for her because, well, it’s from you. But… to help ease your fears and ensure you pick the perfect one for her, let’s break it down...

What Kind of Hand & Hand Shape Does She Have?

First, you’ll need to consider her hands and hand shape. Does she have larger more prominent hands or does she have a smaller more delicate shape? This is typically the first thing we will ask you. The bigger her hands, the bigger you can go with a stone, band and overall ring style...in essence,  you have quite a bit of playing room here. I like to tell people in this situation to “use their imagination.” Take a look at some of the more unique, chunkier styles because it will compliment her hand well. For those ladies with dainty little hands, you need to make sure you don’t go overboard with the stone, style and band. Smaller is better here. You don’t want to have a ring that overpowers her delicate hand.

What Kind of Band Should I Choose?

Next, it’s time to think of a band type that will work. Again, it’s all about proportion. Smaller bands look best on smaller, shorter hands and fingers. Thicker bands tend to look best on longer, slender hands and fingers. If you have someone with more of a wider finger, it’s best to stay somewhere in between the two.

What Diamond Shape Should I Choose?

Finally, it’s time to consider the different types of diamond cuts. There are 10 basic shapes to choose from: round, emerald, princess, cushion, asscher, heart, marquise, oval, radiant, and pear. As you might have guessed...different shapes look better on different types of hands, so let’s dig a little deeper into which cuts look best on certain finger types: Short Fingers - Choose a Small Round, Asscher, Marquise, Princess, Oval or Pear shape; Avoid Large Round, Emerald or Heart shapes. Long Fingers - Choose a Round, Emerald, Cushion, Princess, Oval, Asscher; Avoid Marquise, Radiant or Pear shapes. Wide Fingers - Choose a Round cluster design, Radiant, Marquise (set horizontally), Princess, Oval or Pear; Avoid a traditional Marquise setting and Emerald cut. Thin Fingers - Choose a Round, Emerald, Cushion, Princess, Oval or Pear cut; Avoid Radiant and Heart shapes.
